What are the 3 Stages of Hair Growth?

How does that affect Laser Hair Removal?

Hair is made up of 2 parts: the hair follicle and the hair shaft.

The hair follicle anchors the hair into the scalp and is made up of the papilla and bulb, both located beneath the scalp.

The bulb can be found at the bottom of each strand containing the active cells which grow the hair around the papilla.

The papilla provides the blood supply to the hair follicle to encourage healthy hair growth.

The hair shaft is the visible hair that grows out from the follicle which is made up of a hard protein called Keratin and a protective layer called the cuticle.

There are around 100,000 hair follicles on the scalp, which is why it is normal to lose up to 100 hairs a day (because there is plenty more where they came from!).

Between starting to grow and falling out years later, each hair passes through three stages: anagen, catagen, telogen.

  • Anagen (Growing Phase) - The Anagen phase is the period of growth. The growing phase lasts two to seven years and determines the length of our hair. Over time, the length of the anagen stage decreases.

  • Catagen (Transition Phase) - This is the transitional stage that lasts about ten days. The hair follicle shrinks and detaches from the dermal papilla. The hair stops growing and detaches itself from the blood supply.

  • Telogen (Resting Phase) - This is the final stage called the resting phase which lasts around three months. Around 10-15 percent of hairs are in this phase.

The old hair is resting and new hair begins the growth phase.

Exogen is the New Hair Growth phase. This is part of the resting phase where the old hair sheds and a new hair continues to grow.

Approximately 50 to 150 hairs can fall out daily, this is considered to be normal hair shedding.

How does Laser Removal Affect hair growth?

Laser Hair Removal works more efficiently than others hair removal treatment. It is the most effective way to reduce the hair re-growth. In a sense, it provides an almost permanent reduction of hair growth.

This hair growth Anagen phase is ideal for Laser Hair Removal because since it is still attached to the papilla the laser can attack the papilla and prevent any new growth.

This stage usually lasts for about 2-3 weeks and occurs for both facial and body hair.
